Announcing New Vice President of Academic Affairs at Capitol Technology University

Capitol Technology University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. John A. LaNear, J.D., Ph.D., as our new Vice President of Academic Affairs effective January 2nd. Bringing a wealth of experience and a strong academic background, Dr. LaNear is poised to make significant contributions to Capitol Tech’s growth and development.

Dr. LaNear’s journey in academia is marked by impressive achievements and dedicated leadership. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a J.D., from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law. His long history with online degree delivery models complements Capitol Tech’s mixed delivery methods at the bachelors, masters, and doctoral levels. Before joining Capitol Tech, Dr. LaNear served as the Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Northcentral University in San Diego, CA. Here, he demonstrated his prowess in strategic planning, program development, and fostering a student-first culture. He has been instrumental in leading the implementation of a variety of innovative academic initiatives. His tenure at Northcentral University was marked by significant institutional accomplishments, including the development of over 40 new degree programs and the establishment of a robust faculty governance model. His efforts in enhancing full-time and part-time faculty and staff development opportunities, as well as his contribution to diversity and retention initiatives, were notable.

Prior to his time at NCU, Dr. LaNear has served as faculty member, department chair, and Dean in a variety of complex institutions. Before beginning his academic career as an adjunct faculty member, he served as Assistant Attorney General in Missouri, where he worked in the Department of Labor Division.

Dr. LaNear’s academic contributions are extensive. His publications in the field of education law and policy, particularly focused on academic freedom and legal issues in special education, highlight his expertise and commitment to educational research. His work has been recognized with several awards, including the Education Law Association’s Outstanding Dissertation of the Year. At Capitol Tech, Dr. LaNear will leverage his extensive experience to enhance academic programs, foster faculty engagement and development, and implement strategic initiatives aligned with the university’s mission. His proven track record in academic leadership and program development will be instrumental in driving the university towards new heights of academic excellence and innovation.
