A one-year report from Hood College's president

Frederick News-Post

August 2, 2016

On July 1, I celebrated my first anniversary as Hood College’s 11th president. One of the many rewards of this position has been the warm welcome I have received from the Frederick community. I am deeply grateful for the hospitality and support that have been shown to me and Hood over the past year.

During this time, I have come to recognize and appreciate the long history of positive and mutually beneficial relations between the college and the community.

Nearly 5,000 Hood alumni are Frederick County residents, contributing their time, talent and treasure to the arts and civic activities, as well as to their professional lives. The college contributes more than $100 million to the local economy annually, and each year, our students, faculty and staff provide approximately 15,000 hours of volunteer service to improve the lives of Frederick residents.

At the same time, the community affords our students opportunities to enrich their educational opportunities outside the classroom. Last year, Frederick businesses, government agencies, schools and community organizations provided 112 internships to our undergraduate and graduate students.
