For many, teaching is more than just a job. Countless hours go into the profession — not only in preparing lessons, but also the time spent in continuing education to become a better instructor.
There are more than 58,000 teachers in Maryland, according to 2013-2014 data from the National Center for Education Statistics. That extra time put into the job has paid off for five of those Maryland teachers — Jillian M. Durr, Sharalyn Heinly, Anne Highfield, Shalonda Holt and Donna Miller — who were recently named top teachers for their respective counties for 2016.
And while they teach different subjects, different grades, in different areas, they each have one thing in common: ties to McDaniel College. Each has either finished or soon will finish master's degrees from the school.
It's not just these five teachers. Since 2010, three McDaniel alumni have been named Maryland Teacher of the Year.
