Hood College President Ron Volpe started his career as a sports reporter for the Erie Times in Pennsylvania. Even when he left that gig, it was with clear plans that did not include running, or even working at, a college.
He was finishing his master’s degree in business adminstration at Xavier University. He was also sure he was going to make a fortune selling soap for Proctor and Gamble, whose headquarters were outside of Cincinnati, just miles away and where he was an intern.
But then he got an unexpected proposition. It was from a business dean at his original alma mater, Gannon University in Pennsylvania. He wanted him to come teach there.
“I said, ‘oh, no.’ The prospect of Proctor and Gamble during the week and Cincinnati Reds on the weekend — it was like I had died and gone to heaven,” said 69-year-old Volpe, remembering himself at 22.
