Simon Newman has done private equity. He's started multiple businesses and raised billions of dollars. He's been in consulting, working with companies like Disney and Universal Studios.

Now he's making a huge jump into higher education. Newman on Tuesday started as the new president of Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, stepping into office a few months after being named to the position in December when the university completed a six-month search for a successor to its retiring longtime leader Thomas H. Powell.

Newman, 51, has been a business executive for decades. His background includes stints at big-name companies like Bain & Co. and L.E.K. Consulting. Prior to taking the Mount St. Mary's job, he was managing director of the Los Angeles private equity fund JP Capital Partners and CEO of Los Angeles-based merger and acquisition, private equity and strategic consulting firm Cornerstone Management Group.
