For some at McDaniel College, Jan Term was a chance to take a new type of class, be it one that teaches how to cope with stress or one that thrusts students into the theater experience.

But for others, like senior Khadijah Poston, Jan Term was a chance to dip her toe into the workforce. McDaniel’s winter term, known as Jan Term, is a three-week session in-between the fall and spring semesters. One semester of Jan Term is included in each student’s tuition.

Poston, a Hammond High School graduate from Columbia, spent the last three weeks interning at Maryland Public Television, where she got to jump into the world of production, each day working with different producers and helping to contribute.

“I just help them with whatever they need,” she said.

MPT is a public television network that includes six television stations that broadcast in Maryland, as well as into the District of Columbia and parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, according to its website. MPT is a member of the Public Broadcasting Service.

Poston said MPT does a lot of different TV shows, like for kids or involving cooking.

“What I’ve been working with is ‘Maryland Farm & Harvest,’ ” she said.

Poston said she spent her three works pulling footage and clips, and working to help transcribe them. She also got to be a part of the editing process and, while she has edited video before, she said she learned about different types of editing software.
