For over 230 years, Maryland has provided support to independent, nonprofit colleges and universities. For the past 40 years, that support has come from the Sellinger Program. By partnering with its independent colleges and universities, the State of Maryland is able to offer a broader array of higher education opportunities to more students in every region of the State and at a lower cost for State taxpayers.

For almost two centuries, the State has provided appropriations to its independent colleges for academic buildings, operating expenses, land, residence halls, and equipment. Today, the State supports academic buildings at independent colleges through the MICUA Capital Grant Program.

Each State-aided independent institution that receives Sellinger funds reports annually to MICUA on programs that promote and enhance cultural diversity. MICUA compiles the information and submits a report to the Maryland Higher Education Commission that includes an analysis of best practices.
